program description:
This 3-hour class will cover the history of the “classic” psychedelics, their integration into mental health care and clinical utility in psychoanalytic treatment. We will focus on the psychopharmacology of these substances in passing and discuss ethical and legal considerations. The seminar is designed to prepare analysts for clinical encounters with patients who wish to discuss the adjunctive use of substances as part of their treatment. 2-3 readings will be recommended prior to the seminar to deepen participants understanding of the topic.

- Describe the historical use of classic psychedelics within psychiatry and psychology, including the contemporary resurgence of interest in psychedelics.
- Identify at least three substances classified as “classic” psychedelics and summarize their primary neurobiological mechanisms of action.
- Identify potential intersections between psychedelic experiences and psychoanalytic treatment, including transference and meaning-making.
- Formulate clinical responses to patients who inquire about or disclose psychedelic use within the context of ongoing psychoanalytic treatment
