erotic longing and the desire for identicality

Saturday, March 7th, 2026, 12pm – 2:30pm PT on Zoom

program description:

Dr. Margaret Allan presents a compelling case of a patient’s ruthless pursuit for identicality with the analyst. Asymmetry, a radioactive notion for the patient, captured important ways the analyst did not match her experience, prompting protest and relentless bids for specificity of recognition and acknowledgment of reciprocal feelings, erotic and otherwise. Dr. Allan came to see the impasse, and the enduring tension with her patient not just as something to be worked through in the immediate eruptions, but as the milieu of the analytic relationship as a living system whereby the patient was able to locate herself in the battle for recognition and begin to grieve the limitations of the current and archaic relationships.

Dr. Peter Kaufmann examines the case through the lens of Winnicott’s concepts of breakdown, object use, and the analyst’s surviving the patient’s destruction, arguing that Dr. Allan provided the exact fittedness that the patient needed, providing a place for the patient to live through the breakdown, the primary trauma, and risk coming out as her true self, expressing all parts of her potential.
