ABOUT THE EXTENSION PROGRAM
The Extension Program offers classes in contemporary psychoanalysis to both licensed therapists and those in training who are not yet licensed.
Extension Program participants receive an extensive introduction to both contemporary and classical analytic theory. In addition, all courses are taught by ICP members and candidates in a way that promotes active exploration of the application of psychoanalytic concepts in the clinical setting.
The program is structured in two parts. A one-year Foundations Class provides the student with the basic concepts of analytic theory and technique. The Advanced Class builds on the learning from the first year to explore more complex and sophisticated ideas and applications.
Classes meet once a month for 10 consecutive months. All class meetings are held on the third Saturday of each month, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon, at the ICP office. The curriculum starts in September 2017 and runs until June 2018.
The Extension Program can be taken as a stand-alone course of study, and it can also serve as an educational platform for advancement into higher levels of psychoanalytic training, including the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Program and the 4-Year Candidate Psychoanalytic Training.
The first year program presents a survey of historical models, along with an introduction to contemporary analytic thinking. The classes focus on core psychoanalytic concepts and their basic application to clinical practice. They include:
- Overview of Contemporary Psychoanalytic Theory
- Freud and the History of Psychoanalysis
- Object Relations
- Object Relations Clinical Case Conference
- Self Psychology
- Intersubjective Systems Theory
- Relational Perspectives
- Specificity Theory
- Clinical Case Conference from Different Perspectives
- The Contribution of Infant Research to our Clinical Thinking

The Advanced Class is for those students who have completed the Foundations Program, but who are not yet eligible to participate in the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Program or the 4-Year Candidate Psychoanalytic Training. Students in the advanced class are given the opportunity to have significant input into their course of study. In this way, the classes are tailored to provide the student with the most clinically useful education possible.
