Course Title
Refresher Course for Psychoanalysis
Eligibility
Psychoanalysts with two years psychoanalytic training
Goals
The Refresher course will offer practicing psychoanalysts:
- A forum for critical thinking of advanced conceptualizations relevant to the theory and practice of contemporary psychoanalysis.
- An opportunity to integrate ideas from disciplines beyond of psychoanalysis (e.g. philosophy, history, arts, literature, politics) and to consider how to collaborate with other disciplines.
- A context for discussion of current ethical dilemmas.
- Ways to develop innovative strategies to teach psychoanalysis.
Description
The Refresher Course in Psychoanalysis is proposed in response to the challenges faced by the practicing psychoanalyst to keeping up with the myriad and diverse developments in the field. Once intensive psychoanalytic training has been completed, psychoanalysts have limited options for the type of in-depth training found at the level of the Institute immersion provided to the psychoanalytic candidate. This course will include didactic review, clinical case discussion, ethical consultation and process related interactions. It will also support endeavors important to practicing psychoanalysts such as writing, teaching, consultation and publication.
Curriculum
- It is proposed that the curriculum include the following content areas in the didactic portion:
- The history and systems of psychoanalytic thinking (Freud and beyond)
- Contemporary theoretical developments in psychoanalysis
- Contemporary technical developments in psychoanalysis
- Psychoanalytic collaboration with other disciplines (education, politics)
- Applied psychoanalysis (art, literature, film, politics)
- Law and ethics
- It is proposed that the educational structure be at the level of critical thinking and scholarship consistent with the needs of practicing psychoanalysts.
